We believe that the Bible, God's Word, teaches the
following:
The Verbal Inspiration of the Bible
We believe that the Old and New Testaments, to be verbally inspired of God
in the original, infallible and God- breathed, a perfect rule for faith and
practice.
- (2 Tim 3:16-17) All
Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate,
equipped for every good work.
- (1 Cor 2:13) which
things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught
by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
- (2 Pet 1:19-21) And so
we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay
attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the
morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no
prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy
was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke
from God.
The
Trinity We believe in the Holy Trinity, that there are three
distinct persons of the God-head. The trinity of God is His tri-personal
existence as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
- (Mat 28:19) "Go
therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
- (Isa 44:6) "Thus says
the LORD, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the
first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.
- (John 8:58) Jesus said
to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I
am."
- (Acts 5:3-4) But
Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy
Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the land? "While it remained
unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under
your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You
have not lied to men, but to God."
God the
Father We believe that God is an eternal person, having no
beginning and no ending, and that He is creator of all, infinite and
infallible.
- (Isa 40:28) Do you not
know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the
ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is
inscrutable.
- (Rom 1:20) For since
the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and
divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been
made, so that they are without excuse.
- (Psa 90:1-2) (A Prayer
of Moses the man of God.) Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all
generations. Before the mountains were born, Or Thou didst give birth to the
earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art
God.
God the
Son We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and God the
Son. We believe that He is the only Savior of mankind.
- Acts 4:12) "And there
is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has
been given among men, by which we must be saved."
We believe that He is
God incarnate (in human flesh).
- (Rom 8:3) For what the
Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned
sin in the flesh,
- (John 1:1, 14) In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And
the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of
the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
We believe that being
very God, Jesus is the creator of all things.
- (Col 1:15-17) And He
is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. For by Him
all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things
have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him
all things hold together.
He is the only mediator
between God and men.
- (1 Tim 2:5) For there
is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus
We believe in His
virgin birth.
- (Mat 1:18-25) Now the
birth of Jesus Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed
to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy
Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to
disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly. But when he had considered
this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph,
son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has
been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. "And she will bear a Son; and you
shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their
sins." Now all this took place that what was spoken by the Lord through the
prophet might be fulfilled, saying, "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD,
AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated
means, "GOD WITH US." And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of
the Lord commanded him, and took her as his wife, and kept her a virgin until
she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
We believe that Jesus
lived a holy, and sinless life.
- (1 Pet 2:21-22) For
you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you,
leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, WHO COMMITTED NO SIN,
NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
- (Isa 53:9) His grave
was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because
He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
We believe in His
vicarious death (that He died in our place).
- (Isa 53:5-8) But He
was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are
healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own
way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. He was
oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that
is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He
did not open His mouth. By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as
for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the
living, For the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was
due?
- (Rom 5:8) But God
demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.
We believe in His
bodily resurrection.
- (John 2:19) Jesus
answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise
it up." But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
- (Luke 24:39) "See My
hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not
have flesh and bones as you see that I have."
We are looking forward
to His return to this earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
- (Isa 9:6-7) For a
child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will
rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of
His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To
establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and
forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
- (Rev 1:7-8, 22:20)
BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those
who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Even so.
Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was
and who is to come, the Almighty." He who testifies to these things says, "Yes,
I am coming quickly." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
God the Holy
Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is Very God of Very God.
- (1 Cor 3:16, 6:19) Do
you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you? Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in
you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
We believe that the
Holy Spirit baptizes believers into the body of Christ.
- (1 Cor 12:13) For by
one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether
slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
We believe that the
Holy Spirit indwells all believers.
- (Rom 8:9) However,
you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells
in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to
Him.
- (1 Cor 3:16) Do you
not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you?
We believe that the
Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth.
- (John 14:26) "But the
Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach
you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you, (see also
John 16:7-15).
We believe that
speaking in tongues (ecstatic utterances) should not be practiced in the
worship service today.
- 1 Cor 14:9, 23) So
also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be
known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. If therefore the
whole church should assemble together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted
men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
Mankind
We believe that man was created in the likeness and image of God, but
through the sin of Adam fell from this sinless state. Sin has distorted and
marred this "image of God" within humans, and is in need of restoration, and
renewal.
- (Rom 8:29) For whom
He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son,
that He might be the first-born among many brethren;
- (Col 3:10) and have
put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the
image of the One who created him.
We believe that this
distorted nature from Adam is passed to each person by their parents, causing
all to sin, and all to die. This sin nature has affected every part of us
(total depravity) rendering us totally unable not to sin.
- (Eph 2:1-3) And you
were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according
to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air,
of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we
too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the
flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the
rest.
- (Rom 3:23) for all
have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (see also
Rom.3:10-18).
Salvation
We believe that man is justified by faith in the Person and work of Jesus
Christ, and His shed blood on the cross. We believe that mankind is saved by
grace through faith apart from works, rituals, or religious activities.
- (Eph 2:8-9) For by
grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the
gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.
- (Col 1:13-14) For He
delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of
His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of
sins.
- (Gal 2:16)
nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but
through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we
may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by
the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified. (See also Rom.5:1-19, Titus
3:5-7).
Eternal
Security We believe that once a person is born again, he cannot
lose his new nature, nor his salvation, and that he is eternally secure in the
Lord Jesus Christ.
- (John 6:39) "And this
is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose
nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
- (John 10:27-29) "My
sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal
life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of
My hand. "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one
is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
- (Rom 8:38-39) For I
am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor
things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any
other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which
is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Baptism and
Communion We believe that believer baptism by immersion is the only
Scriptural mode. We believe that baptism does not save, that it is an act of
obedience to the command of Christ and a testimony to the world of your faith
in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- (Mat 28:19-20) "Go
therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the
age."
- (Rom 6:1-6) What
shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase? May it
never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know
that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into
His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death,
in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united
with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the
likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified
with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no
longer be slaves to sin;
- (Col 2:12) having
been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him
through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
We believe that
communion (the Lord's Supper) is a symbolic ordinance, picturing Christ's body
broken for our sins and His blood shed for our redemption. It is not a saving
ordinance, but helps us remember His death, and inspires us in looking forward
to His coming.
- (1 Cor 11:23, 26) For
I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord
Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; For as often as you eat
this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He
comes.
The Church
We believe that the local organized church is a body of believers, and
that Christ is the only "Head of the body, the church.
- (Col 1:18) He is also
head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the
dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in
everything.
- (1 Cor 12:12-13) For
even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the
body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit
we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Separation of
Church and State We believe in the separation of church and state.
The civil government is of divine appointment, and that governors of states and
nations should be obeyed when the laws they seek to enforce are not in conflict
with the gospel.
- (Rom 13:1-7) Let every
person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority
except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who
resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed
will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear
for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do
what is good, and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of
God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not
bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings
wrath upon the one who practices evil. Wherefore it is necessary to be in
subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. For
because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting
themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax
is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom
honor.
- (Mat 22:17-21) "Tell
us therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or
not?" But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you
hypocrites? "Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax." And they brought Him a
denarius. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They
said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the
things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."
Heaven and
Hell We believe that heaven is a place prepared for all believers
in Jesus Christ.
- (John 14:1-6) "Let
not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. "In My Father's
house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I
go to prepare a place for you. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
"And you know the way where I am going." Thomas said^ to Him, "Lord, we do not
know where You are going, how do we know the way?" Jesus said^ to him, "I am
the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through
Me.
- (Rev 21:1-4) And I saw
a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed
away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her
husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the
tabernacle of God is among men, and He shall dwell among them, and they shall
be His people, and God Himself shall be among them, and He shall wipe away
every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall
no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed
away."
We believe that hell
is a place prepared for the devil and his angels, and those who die in
unbelief.
- (Mat 25:41) "Then He
will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the
eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
- (Rev 21:8) "But for
the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons
and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that
burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." (See also Luke
16:19-31).
A Personal
Devil We believe that Satan is a personal, spirit being, that he
is the deceiver of mankind, and that one day God will cast him into the lake of
fire.
- (Rev 12:9-10) And the
great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and
Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his
angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,
"Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority
of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down,
who accuses them before our God day and night.
- (Rev 20:10) And the
devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the
beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and
night for ever and ever.
